Bayelsa Governor Vows Justice

Amgbare Ekaunkumo, Yenagoa

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri has pledged to ensure justice for the family of Daniel Ayama, a 26-year-old Federal University, Otuoke graduate shot dead on May 16 at INEC Junction, Yenagoa.

On Wednesday, Diri visited the Ayama family in Kpansia, Yenagoa, to offer condolences and assure them of a thorough investigation.

The family alleges police involvement in the killing, while state police claim it stemmed from a cult clash.

Diri stressed impartiality, stating, “We are not siding with any narrative, whether it’s alleged police action or cult-related violence. Our focus is the truth.”

The state’s Special Committee on Security and Human Rights Violations is probing the case, with the Department of State Services (DSS) state director involved.

Commending the state’s police leadership, Diri urged professionalism and expressed dismay at the allegations against law enforcement.

He added that the government is covering medical costs for three others injured in the incident and prayed for the family’s resilience.

Smart Ayama, representing the family, thanked Diri for his support and visit.

He noted that the family ceased protests to focus on seeking justice. “We want accountability for our son’s death,” he said.

Accompanying Diri were senior officials, including Chief of Staff Dr. Peter Akpe and Commissioner for Information Mrs. Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai.

The investigation continues to uncover the circumstances surrounding Ayama’s death.
