Mokwa Flood: Death Toll Rises to 153 – NSEMA Confirms

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed that the death toll from the devastating flood in Mokwa has climbed to 153, following the discovery of additional bodies.

NSEMA’s Director General, Abdullahi Baba Arah, revealed the update during a daily briefing on the disaster. According to him, two more bodies were recovered late Saturday beneath a bridge and were buried on Sunday morning.

“Two more dead bodies were recovered late yesterday under the bridge. They were buried this morning,” Arah stated.

With this development, the official death toll now stands at 153, while the total number of affected residents has reached 3,018, according to the agency.

Affected Communities

  • Ndayako Village
No fatalities were reported, but 98 people were displaced, and 58 houses were destroyed by the floodwaters.
  • Raba Community
Five houses were affected, and a key access bridge was completely washed away, cutting off the area.

Arah assured that search and rescue efforts are ongoing, and temporary relief measures have been activated to assist displaced and affected individuals.

The flood, which has caused widespread damage to infrastructure and displaced thousands, remains one of the deadliest natural disasters in Niger State’s recent history.
