Diri Assures Bayelsans of Potable Water After Power Project Completion

By Amgbare Ekaunkumo, Yenagoa

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has assured residents that his administration will prioritize the provision of potable water across Yenagoa and surrounding areas once the ongoing independent power plant project is completed later this year.

Speaking at King Koko Square in Nembe, headquarters of Nembe Local Government Area, Governor Diri revealed that the state will soon receive two 60MW gas-powered turbines procured by his administration. He added that installation work at the Elebele site is nearing completion.

According to him, the project will supply power to Yenagoa, Nembe, Ogbia, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Sagbama, and parts of Ekeremor Local Government Areas.

The governor made the remarks during his ongoing Thank-You Tour of the state’s eight local government areas. He expressed gratitude to the people of Nembe Kingdom for their support during the 2023 governorship election, which he said enabled his administration to continue its developmental strides.

Responding to community appeals, Diri addressed the request for the construction of the Igbeta–Ewoama–Okoroba road, noting that the state will partner with the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the South-South Development Commission to implement road projects that connect rural communities to the state capital.

The governor was accompanied by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, state legislators, and other top government officials. They were warmly welcomed by residents, who expressed appreciation for ongoing initiatives such as the Nembe–Brass road project and efforts to maintain peace in the area.

In a goodwill message, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah (rtd), the immediate past deputy governor and chairman of the Bayelsa State Elders Council, commended Governor Diri’s developmental efforts. Also, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Biriyai Dambo (SAN), lauded the administration’s initiatives.

Nembe Council Chairman, Chief David Alagoa, and former PDP senatorial candidate, Chief Blessing Izagara, appealed for additional projects including potable water and health facilities. Governor Diri assured them that their requests will be addressed following the power project’s completion.
