BREAKING: INEC Receives 110 Applications for New Political Parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it has received 110 applications from associations seeking registration as political parties in Nigeria.

INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, revealed this on Wednesday during the second regular consultative meeting with media executives, held at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Yakubu stated that INEC is processing the applications in accordance with existing laws, as well as its 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.

“As of Monday, June 23, 2025, the Commission has received letters of intent from 110 associations wishing to register as political parties,” he said. “We are diligently reviewing the requests as outlined in the law. We have acknowledged all applications received so far, except six recent submissions which will be acknowledged before the end of the week.”

The INEC Chairman emphasized that interested groups can access the handbook on political party registration on the Commission’s official website.

In a move to ensure transparency, Yakubu disclosed that INEC is releasing the full list of the 110 associations, including their proposed names, acronyms, addresses, and names of protem Chairmen and Secretaries.

“The list will be uploaded to our website and social media platforms shortly, while hard copies are included in your folders for this meeting,” he added.

The surge in applications comes amid growing political interest ahead of future electoral cycles, including the 2027 general elections.
