Ex-Ebonyi PDP Chairman Silas Onu Defects to ADC

Former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, Barrister Silas Onu, has officially resigned from the party and declared his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Onu, who was the PDP’s senatorial candidate for the February 4, 2024, rerun election in Ebonyi South, made his decision known in a resignation letter dated Wednesday, July 16, 2025, and addressed to the PDP chairman of his Obiozara Ward.

In the letter, the former PDP chieftain urged his supporters to join him in the ADC, which he described as a more stable political platform capable of advancing democratic ideals ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“It is with a heavy heart, yet with patriotic conviction, that I tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” he wrote.

Onu recounted his active contributions to the PDP, including his service as State Publicity Secretary and later as State Chairman, positions he used to strengthen the party’s structure in Ebonyi State.

He added, “I was also privileged to be elected as the PDP candidate for the Ebonyi South Senatorial by-election in February 2024. This decision to leave did not come lightly. However, the ongoing interference by a few sitting governors in the party’s internal affairs has made it difficult to continue under the PDP umbrella.”

Citing irreconcilable differences, Onu said his move to the ADC aligns with a broader coalition of opposition leaders working to reposition the political landscape ahead of the next elections.

He expressed gratitude to the PDP for the support he received during his years of service and expressed hope that his political allies would join him in building a stronger movement under the ADC.

“I appreciate the support I’ve received over the years and look forward to continuing the journey toward a better Nigeria under the ADC,” he concluded.
