Peter Obi Has Better Chance To Defeat Tinubu In 2027, Says El-Rufai’s Son

Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has said that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, stands a stronger chance of defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election than any other opposition figure.

In a post shared via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, Bashir suggested that even former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would struggle to unseat Tinubu, especially if Obi selects a credible northern running mate.

According to him, Obi presents a more serious challenge to Atiku than to Tinubu, largely due to his massive support base among Nigerian youths and his strong grassroots appeal.

“Atiku is a formidable political figure. He believes the time is finally right for him. Though many consider 2019 his best chance, he may see 2027 as his moment,” Bashir wrote.

“But the sheer momentum behind Obi — his numbers and near-cult-like following — poses a real threat. His influence among young Nigerians is unmatched. With a strong Northern running mate, Obi would defeat Tinubu before Aunty Remi finishes her breakfast.”

Bashir’s comments come amid growing speculation around opposition strategy for the 2027 elections.

It will be recalled that Bashir’s father, Nasir El-Rufai, recently joined forces with top opposition leaders including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Senate President David Mark, and ex-Minister Rauf Aregbesola under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform. The coalition was officially unveiled in Abuja on March 20, 2025, with the aim of unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The alliance, still in its formative stage, is expected to field a consensus presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general election.
