PenCom Seeks FG Approval to Raise Police Pension Contribution to 20%

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has called on the Federal Government to increase its pension contribution for police officers from the current 10% to 20%, in a bid to improve their retirement benefits.

PenCom Director General, Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, made the appeal during a visit to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, at Force Headquarters, Abuja, following recent protests by retired officers over poor welfare and demands to exit the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

Oloworaran outlined several proposed reforms, including introducing a health insurance scheme for retirees, raising monthly pensions to 75% of an officer’s final salary, expanding the Retirement Resettlement Fund, and overhauling the police pension structure. She stressed that exiting the CPS would be unnecessary and counterproductive, urging patience as reforms are implemented.

IG Egbetokun commended PenCom’s initiatives and pledged the Police Force’s cooperation in addressing pension concerns. He assured officers that their welfare remains a priority.

Earlier in August, President Bola Tinubu directed PenCom to resolve the long-standing police pension issues, insisting that those who protect the nation must retire with dignity and financial security.
