THE BEARING: Why Nigerians Must Register to Vote Ahead of 2027

Elections are often seen as beginning on voting day, but in reality, the process starts much earlier—with voter registration. Without registering, citizens cannot participate in shaping the country’s future at the polls.

On August 18, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) commenced its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise across the country. However, reports suggest that many Nigerians are either unaware of the exercise or have yet to take advantage of the opportunity.

In this episode of The Bearing, we take a closer look at how the registration is progressing, the challenges being faced, and why it is crucial for every eligible Nigerian to register before the 2027 general elections.

Beyond being a civic duty, voter registration is the gateway to exercising political rights—ensuring that citizens have a say in leadership choices, policy direction, and governance at all levels. Failure to register now means being locked out of that process when election day arrives.

As INEC continues the CVR exercise, the call remains clear: for democracy to thrive, citizens must take ownership by registering to vote.
