China Inaugurates 14th ‘Chinese Corner’ in Abuja

By Francis Wilfred

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has inaugurated the 14th “Chinese Corner” at Government Secondary School (GSS) Tudun Wada, Abuja, further strengthening cultural and educational ties between Nigeria and China.

The initiative, first launched in 2013, is funded by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and serves as a platform for cultural exchange, language learning, and access to opportunities such as scholarships and jobs in Chinese companies.

Speaking at the ceremony, Cultural Counsellor Yang Jianxing described the Chinese Corner as a “bridge narrowing the hearts of young people from both countries” and a “window for students to observe the world.” He noted that many beneficiaries have secured scholarships to study in China or gained employment through the programme.

Yang commended CCECC for constructing the new facility, describing it as a testament to the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and China–Nigeria friendship.

On his part, Dr. Muhammed Sani Ladan, Director/Secretary of the FCT Secondary Education Board, said the initiative goes beyond cultural exchange, offering resources for Mandarin learning, scholarships, and artistic collaborations. He recalled that the first Chinese Corner was established at GSS Garki in 2013, with subsequent expansions in GSS Wuse Zone 3 and now GSS Tudun Wada.

Representing the FCT Education Secretariat, Dr. Ladan hailed the donation as “a legacy written in gold in the annals of our history.”

Also speaking, FCT Secretary for Education, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, highlighted the strategic importance of the initiative. He revealed that Mandarin has now been added as one of the international languages offered in senior secondary schools in the FCT, citing its global relevance in commerce, tourism, and education.

He also acknowledged the People’s Education Press of China for donating books and designing Chinese language programmes tailored to Nigerian classrooms, ahead of the 2026 China–Africa Year of People-to-People Exchange and the 55th anniversary of Nigeria–China relations.

The inauguration featured cultural displays and student performances, showcasing both Nigerian and Chinese traditions.

With 14 Chinese Corners now operational in Abuja, the initiative has become a model of cultural diplomacy, deepening bilateral ties while creating new opportunities for Nigerian students.
