Police Inspector Dies in Accidental Shooting in Kano, Rifle Recovered in Yobe


Kano/Yobe, Nigeria — A police inspector, identified as Aminu Ibrahim, died on Saturday morning in Kano State after an accidental gunshot from his service rifle while on duty.

According to preliminary investigations, the incident occurred at about 5:40 a.m. at a private company premises in the Hotoro area of Kano Municipal. The officer, attached to Hotoro Division, reportedly entered a toilet within the facility when the loaded AK-47 rifle hanging around his neck discharged, striking him in the stomach.

Police sources said the rifle, with registration number GT 4177, was recovered in an unsafe condition, alongside an empty shell. Of the 30 rounds of ammunition issued to the officer, 29 were accounted for.

Inspector Ibrahim was rushed to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a doctor on duty. His body has been deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy.

Meanwhile, in Yobe State, police operatives have recovered an AK-47 rifle snatched from an officer and arrested two suspects in connection with the incident.

The rifle was taken on September 26 at about 7:00 p.m. when Corporal Amani Ali, who was on duty at the Federal Medical Centre in Nguru, was attacked by unknown assailants and left unconscious.

Security sources said the rifle, with number 562529129, was later found in a nearby swamp without its magazine. The magazine, a cap, palm slippers, and a sword sheath believed to belong to the attackers were subsequently recovered as exhibits.

Corporal Ali is currently receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Nguru. The Yobe State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has taken over the case for further investigation.
