Group Presses Nasarawa Assembly for Speedy Passage of Climate Change Bill

y Leo Zwanke, Lafia

The Nasarawa State Network on Environment and Climate Justice (NASNECJ) has renewed calls for the swift passage of the Climate Change Bill, describing climate change as a global threat that demands urgent legislative response. The group, led by its Coordinator, Mr. Okolo Envoh, staged a campaign at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly in Lafia on Tuesday, urging lawmakers to fast-track the process.

“We have already seen the commitment of the House to ensure the passage of the Climate Change Bill into law,” Envoh said. “We are appealing for speedy passage to address climate change issues in the state. Our organisation will continue to provide technical support to ensure the bill becomes law.” Protesters carried placards with messages including: “Pass the Nasarawa State Climate Change Bill Now,” “Delay is Dangerous,” “Protect Communities, Pass the Bill Today,” “Our Children’s Future Depends on the Bill,” and “Climate Justice is Social Justice.”

Responding on behalf of Speaker Dr. Danladi Jatau, Chairman of the House Committee on Environment, Hon. Mohammed Adamu Omadefu, assured the group that the Assembly would not delay in passing the bill.“

This bill has already passed second reading on the floor of the House and a public hearing has been conducted,” Omadefu said. “The campaign you are launching now is practicable because the bill is already in process and will be passed soon, by God’s grace.”

He added that once passed into law, the bill would help address environmental challenges, improve citizens’ quality of life, and safeguard future generations.

The Speaker also commended NASNECJ for its technical support and advocacy, reaffirming the House’s commitment to addressing pressing environmental concerns in the state.-
