African Climate Reporters Commend Kaduna for Ranking 3rd in Nigeria’s 2025 Climate Governance Index

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

A group of scientists under the auspices of the African Climate Reporters (ACR), in collaboration with civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, and other environmental stakeholders, has congratulated the Kaduna State Government for emerging third in the 2025 Nigeria Climate Governance Ranking.

In a statement issued by Comrade Ibrahima Yakubu, Head of Communication and Strategies at ACR, the group expressed delight over the state’s achievement and commended Governor Uba Sani for his unwavering commitment to climate action and environmental protection.

“This milestone reflects the strong dedication of His Excellency, Senator Uba Sani, and the tireless efforts of the Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Abubakar Buba, in driving impactful climate policies and advancing sustainable development in Kaduna State,” the statement read.

Yakubu described the recognition as a historic success for Kaduna, noting that the state moved from 16th position in the previous year to 3rd place in 2025 — behind Lagos (1st) and Katsina (2nd). He expressed optimism that with continued effort, Kaduna could soon top the ranking nationwide.

The group also applauded the Pace Project Kaduna for its consistent advocacy, training programs, and capacity-building initiatives for civil society organizations, government agencies, and community leaders on climate action and environmental sustainability.

Yakubu urged all stakeholders to remain steadfast in combating desertification, deforestation, gully erosion, flooding, and other environmental challenges that threaten biodiversity due to irresponsible human activities.

He further commended Hon. Yusuf Idris Amoke, Special Assistant to the Governor on Climate Change, for his tireless tree-planting campaigns across communities aimed at mitigating extreme heat and reducing global warming. According to Yakubu, Hon. Amoke’s participation in ACR’s monthly climate dialogue sessions has inspired more journalists and scientists to produce educational reports on environmental protection.

“Together, we are building a greener, cleaner, and more resilient Kaduna State. With the strong partnership between government, scientists, and civil society, we can make Kaduna the most environmentally friendly state in Nigeria,” Yakubu stated.

ACR also recognized the contributions of the Safety Awareness and Environmental Support Initiative, NEMA, SEMA, Red Cross, and other disaster management agencies for their proactive role in early warning and rapid response systems to prevent floods and other crises.

The organization further appreciated the Department of Climate Change and Environmental Issues at the Interfaith Mediation Centre (IMC) for promoting environmental stewardship through religious teachings and moral advocacy.

Yakubu concluded by reiterating ACR’s commitment to supporting Kaduna’s environmental agenda and strengthening collaborations with partners such as the Pace Project Kaduna.

“To our able Governor, Senator Uba Sani, we assure you that with your continued support and God’s guidance, Kaduna State will soon take the number one position in climate governance nationwide,” the statement added.
