As the month of December unfolds, family, colleagues, associates, and admirers join in celebrating the birthday of a distinguished professional, statesman, and community leader—Pharmacist Ahmed Ibrahim Yakasai, fondly known by his revered title, Kachallan Kano. Born on December 1, 1960, Pharm. Yakasai marks his 65th birthday, a milestone that reflects a lifetime of service, leadership, and transformative impact.

A Life of Excellence and Impact

 

Pharm. Yakasai’s journey is defined by resilience, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to public good. His early education began in Qur’anic and primary schools before he proceeded through secondary and college education. He earned a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria in 1983, laying the foundation for an illustrious career.

 

He further pursued several postgraduate certificates spanning leadership, emergency preparedness, Islamic banking, public–private partnership management, and more. His global learning exposure includes the University of Salford, Manchester, Fudan University, China, and the University of South Africa, reflecting his forward-thinking, international outlook.

 

Public Service and Leadership

Pharm. Yakasai served two impactful terms as a Commissioner in Kano State:

– Commissioner for Commerce, Industry, Cooperatives, and Tourism (2005–2010)

– Commissioner for Land and Physical Planning (2010–2011)

Throughout his public service years, he demonstrated exceptional leadership, contributing significantly to economic development, urban planning, and institutional improvements.

Professional Leadership and Advocacy

A renowned figure in Nigeria’s pharmaceutical sector, Pharm. Yakasai has held several strategic positions, including:

– President, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (2015–2018)

– 1st Deputy President, PSN (1997–2000)

– Chairman, PSN Kano Branch (1991–1995)

– Chairman, Kano/Jigawa Chapter of the Nigerian Association of General Practice Pharmacists (1989–1991)

As PSN President, he strengthened collaboration among health professionals, regulatory agencies, and the pharmaceutical industry, earning national respect.

Entrepreneurship and Industry Development

 

He is the founder and Managing Director of Pharmaplus Nigeria Ltd, established in 1992, now a notable player in the nation’s pharmaceutical supply chain. He also founded Multiplus Consulting and Multiplus Resources Ltd, and played prominent roles in international initiatives such as the Nigeria–Pakistan Pharma Investment Forum.

 

His regulatory expertise is widely recognized. As a consultant, he has facilitated the registration of numerous pharmaceutical, medical, and food products with NAFDAC, and conducted research under PATH 2 (AXIOS), GHAIN, and other public health projects.

 

Academic and Mentorship Contributions

 

Pharm. Yakasai has served as a part-time lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University, an external examiner for the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, and a key participant in accreditation exercises across pharmacy faculties in Nigerian universities. His mentorship continues to shape the next generation of pharmacists and health leaders.

Philanthropy and Community Service

 

He is the founder of the Safe Medicines Foundation, dedicated to promoting safe medication practices and improving healthcare delivery. He also serves as a Board Member/Trustee of several organizations, including the Society for Family Health (SFH) and the Nigerian Association of Pharmacists and Pharmaceutical Scientists in the Americas (NAPPSA).

 

His annual Ahmed Yakasai Community Service Award celebrates individuals who contribute remarkably to community pharmacy and healthcare.

Pharm. Yakasai’s contributions have earned him multiple prestigious fellowships, including:
