Miaphen Calls for Calm Over Gov. Mutfwang’s Rumoured Defection to APC

By Israel Adamu, Jos

Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Advocates of Nigeria, Comrade Prince Miaphen, has called for calm and restraint over widespread rumours that Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, is preparing to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement issued in Jos on Sunday, Miaphen—who is also a former Acting President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS)—appealed to supporters of both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to avoid tension as political alignments shift in the state.

“My good people of Plateau State, as our beloved Governor, His Excellency Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, concludes arrangements to formally join the All Progressives Congress at both the state and national levels in the coming days, I appeal for calm, restraint, and mutual respect among members of both the APC and PDP,” he said.

He noted that political interests often shape strategic decisions, stressing that defections and realignments are not unusual in a democratic system.

“Politics, as we all understand, is ultimately a game of interests. There are no permanent friends or permanent enemies, but permanent interests,” he stated.

Miaphen added that political rivals frequently become allies in pursuit of shared goals, saying, “Those who contest fiercely today may work together harmoniously tomorrow, all in service of a broader public good.”

He urged supporters of both parties to refrain from inflammatory comments, confrontations, or actions that could heighten tension in the state.

According to him, the APC remains a large and accommodating political platform capable of absorbing diverse interests and leaders. He expressed confidence that increased alignment between state and national party structures would benefit Plateau State.

“I am deeply delighted that a long-standing desire—seeing my own Governor join the party I believe in—is becoming a reality by God’s grace. This development, when concluded, will mark a new chapter in our political history,” he said.

Miaphen emphasized that no one should view the situation as a political victory or loss for any group. Instead, he described recent political developments as part of the “natural rhythm of politics,” stressing that the ultimate priority should be unity and progress.

“Let me emphasize clearly: in all that has transpired before now, there is no victor and no vanquished. What matters most is the unity, peace, and prosperity of Plateau State,” he added.

Expressing optimism about the future, Miaphen said he looks forward to the APC strengthening its presence across the state. “I look forward with excitement to seeing the broom firmly take root across our state in the coming weeks,” he said.
