Why I Don’t Mention the Name of Jesus in My Songs — Shola Allyson Explains

Nigerian singer Shola Allyson has opened up on why she does not explicitly mention the name of Jesus in all her songs, addressing the controversy that has trailed her musical style over the years.

Widely known for her spiritually uplifting and gospel-inspired music, Allyson has often been labelled a gospel singer—a tag she has repeatedly distanced herself from. The debate intensified in March 2025 after some social media users criticised her for not directly referencing Jesus in her lyrics.

Speaking recently on Oyinmomo TV, the soulful singer explained that her songwriting is guided by personal conviction rather than public pressure or expectations. She stressed that she does not see herself as a promoter for any religious figure, but as an artist whose duty is to express truth and inspire through music.

According to her, her sound is designed to reach a broad audience without being restricted by traditional gospel formulas. She added that she prefers authenticity over conforming to labels imposed by critics or fans.

Shola Allyson’s stance reflects the evolving landscape of Nigerian music, where many contemporary artists blend spirituality with mainstream sounds while maintaining creative independence. Her approach continues to challenge conventional interpretations of gospel music and has fueled ongoing conversations about faith, artistic freedom, and the role of music in spiritual expression.
