The Kogi State government has confirmed the killing of four bandits and the abduction of 13 church worshippers during an attack on an ECWA Church in Kiri, Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, on Sunday, December 14, 2025.

State Commissioner for Information, Hon. Kingsley Fanwo, disclosed the details on Monday in Lokoja, noting that the four bandits were neutralized by local hunters while attempting to raid the church during Sunday service. Several other attackers reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds.

Fanwo stated that the abducted victims are currently being pursued by hunters and security operatives. Efforts are ongoing to rescue the 13 individuals safely from the forested areas where the criminals fled.

According to the Commissioner, the surge in criminal activity in Kogi State is linked to intensified bandit operations in neighboring Niger and Kwara States, which have pushed some armed groups into the region. He assured that the state government has mobilized a coordinated security response but acknowledged that additional reinforcements are needed in affected areas.

“We are quite hopeful that the kidnapped persons will be rescued,” Fanwo said, emphasizing that a multi-agency effort is in place. Troops from the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, personnel from the Kogi State Police Command, and local hunters have been deployed to secure the community.

Fanwo added that the Department of State Services (DSS) is supporting operations through intelligence gathering, and the state government has requested air support from the Nigerian Air Force to complement ongoing ground operations.

“The Governor of the State, His Excellency Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, is engaging the service chiefs to ensure an air raid of the forest by the Air Force to support the ground efforts of the Army, Police, and local hunters,” the Commissioner explained.

Commending the bravery of the local hunters for their prompt action, Fanwo reassured residents that the government remains in control and is committed to safeguarding lives and property across Kogi State. He reiterated Governor Ododo’s determination to neutralize criminal elements and restore security in affected communities.

The state government has vowed to maintain a strong, joint security presence in Kiri and other vulnerable areas to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents.
