Journalist’s Late Mother Final Burial Ceremony Begins Monday in Benue, Governors Invited

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

The final burial ceremony of Mrs. Theresa Enyigbo-Edeh Idibia, mother of award-winning investigative journalist Idibia Gabriel, commenced on Monday, December 29, 2025, at A’oko-Onobi, Ipoya Okpale-Ogege, in Edumoga District of Okpokwu Local Government Area, Benue State. The three-day burial rites officially began in the evening with traditional gun salutes, marking the start of a series of cultural activities in honour of the late matriarch, who passed on at the age of 85. The ceremony is expected to draw dignitaries, traditional rulers, journalists, and community members from across the country.

In a statement issued by the family, invitations were extended to the Governors of Benue and Kaduna states, their deputies, and other top government officials, including the Chief of Staff to the Kaduna State Government. The family expressed gratitude for the support and solidarity shown so far by friends, colleagues, and well-wishers. Mrs. Idibia, fondly referred to as Mama Onyigbo, is remembered as a respected community figure whose life embodied service, discipline, and commitment to family values. Her burial ceremony is designed to reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Idoma people.

According to the family, the funeral activities will feature traditional rites such as Ogilinya, cultural dances, masquerade displays, and other indigenous performances synonymous with Benue State, widely known as the nation’s food basket. Traditional rulers, including clan heads, district heads, and village chiefs, have also been invited to attend the burial ceremony in honour of the deceased and in solidarity with her son, who represents a reputable media organisation and serves under the authority of His Royal Highness, the Och’Idoma.

The ceremony is expected to span three consecutive days, with hosting responsibilities shared among the A’Okonobi, Aujah, Oodo, and A’ede Okpale-Ogege-Ahaje communities, known for their hospitality and strong communal bonds.Livestock, including cows, pigs, and goats, have been provided for the rites and communal feasting, in line with local customs associated with final burial ceremonies for elders of high standing in the community.

The family also expressed appreciation to the Kaduna State Council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), commending the council’s chairman, secretary, executive members, and the entire membership for their moral and logistical support throughout the period of mourning. In addition, the journalist appealed to religious leaders and spiritual fathers to continue to offer prayers for the peaceful and successful conduct of the burial rites. The burial ceremony is expected to conclude with final interment rites and thanksgiving activities, as family members, colleagues, and community leaders gather to celebrate the life and legacy of the late Mrs. Theresa Enyigbo-Edeh Idibia.
