FG hails Funke Akindele after film breaks Nollywood box office record

The Federal Government has commended Nollywood actress and producer Funke Akindele following the record-breaking performance of her latest film, Behind the Scenes.

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) described the milestone as a major boost for Nigeria’s creative industry and evidence of the growing global recognition of Nigerian cinema.

According to the agency, Behind the Scenes has surpassed ₦2.1 billion at the Nigerian box office, making it the first Nollywood film to cross the ₦2 billion mark.

The film has also recorded strong international earnings, generating over $111,000 in Canada and about $190,000 across North America.

In a statement, the NOA said the achievement reflects the expanding reach of Nollywood productions and their ability to compete in international markets.

“From Lagos to Toronto, from cinemas in Abuja to theatres overseas, this movie had everyone locked in,” the agency said, while congratulating Akindele on the feat.

The government said the performance underscores the economic and cultural potential of the film industry, noting that sustained investment and policy support could further strengthen Nollywood’s contribution to national development.
