Oborevwori Says Delta Becoming ‘No-Go Area’ for Opposition as State Commissions New Roads

By Anne Azuka

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, says ongoing infrastructure development across the state is strengthening public support for his administration and reducing the political space for opposition parties. The governor made the remark during the inauguration of the 4.8-kilometre Oko–Amakom/Oko-Obiokpu/Oko-Anala Road and other road projects in Asaba and Oko Kingdom, both in Oshimili South Local Government Area.

Speaking at the ceremony, Oborevwori said his administration’s development projects had increased public confidence in government. He noted that the newly completed road would improve transportation for farmers and ease the movement of agricultural produce to markets.

According to the governor, the area previously faced serious access challenges, especially during the rainy season, which forced some farmers to transport produce through neighbouring Anambra State.

He added that the state government had already approved Phase Two of the road project at a cost of ₦16.9 billion. The project will be handled by Setraco Nigeria Limited with a completion timeline of 24 months. Oborevwori also highlighted the completion of the Amaechi Agusi and adjoining roads in Asaba, saying the project would address flooding and improve connectivity for residents and businesses.

The governor said Delta State is currently witnessing what he described as a “harvest of projects,” citing recently completed developments including projects at Government Technical College, Omadino, and new faculty buildings at the University of Delta, Agbor, and Southern Delta University, Ozoro.

Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Reuben Izeze, said the Oko road was constructed above the flood level recorded during the 2012 flood to prevent future disruptions.

Local government officials and community leaders also commended the state government, describing the projects as significant improvements to transportation and economic activity in the area.
