The Plateau State Government has condemned an ambush by suspected bandits that left at least 20 security personnel and local vigilantes dead in the Garga area of Kanam Local Government Area. In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, said the administration of Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang was deeply concerned about the attack, which occurred on Friday and caused panic in Wanka, Kyaram, Gyambau and nearby communities. The government paid tribute to the security personnel and vigilantes who lost their lives during the incident.

“The government commends the bravery and sacrifice of security personnel and local vigilantes who lost their lives while confronting the attackers,” the statement said. “Their courage and dedication remain a testament to their commitment to the safety of Plateau communities. ”The state government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and pledged stronger security measures to address threats in the affected areas. Authorities also urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, and to support security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing operations.

The statement added that the government was consulting with traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders in Kanam to strengthen grassroots support for security efforts. Officials also warned against spreading unverified information that could heighten tension or undermine ongoing security operations.
