Swift action by firefighters and emergency teams prevented a major disaster at the popular Terminus Market (Jos Main Market) in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Saturday night, though more than 10 shops were damaged.
The fire broke out around 10:00 p.m., sending thick plumes of smoke into the night sky as flames spread through sections of shops and goods.
Our correspondent gathered that the blaze was quickly brought under control through joint efforts by teams from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Plateau State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Federal Fire Service, and Plateau State Fire Service.
An eyewitness, Mr Silas Lawrenzo, who spoke to our correspondent, commended the collaborative and rapid response, saying it limited the damage and averted what could have turned into widespread destruction across the market.
No lives were lost in the incident, he added.
Our correspondent, who visited the market on Sunday reports that more than 10 shops were affected by the fire.
The exact cause could not be immediately confirmed by market authorities as at press time.
