CSOs Condemn Wike’s Remarks on Journalist, Raise Concerns Over Press Freedom

A coalition of 14 civil society organisations (CSOs) has criticised comments made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, regarding journalist Seun Okinbaloye, describing them as inappropriate and concerning for press freedom.

In a joint statement, the groups referenced remarks reportedly made by Wike during a live broadcast on Channels Television, where he expressed frustration with the journalist’s interviewing style. The CSOs said such language, even if not intended as a literal threat, could be perceived as intimidating.

The organisations noted that statements suggesting violence, whether hypothetical or humorous, may contribute to a climate of fear for media professionals and undermine confidence in free expression. They emphasised the role of journalists in informing the public and holding public officials accountable, warning that rhetoric perceived as hostile could weaken democratic discourse.

The coalition also called on public officials to exercise restraint in their public communications and uphold standards that support a free and independent press.According to the statement, Nigeria continues to face challenges in press freedom, with journalists sometimes exposed to harassment and intimidation. The CSOs urged constructive engagement between government officials and the media to strengthen democratic values. The statement was endorsed by organisations including the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development, International Press Centre, Media Rights Agenda, and YIAGA Africa, among others.
