The Kano State House of Assembly has withdrawn impeachment proceedings against former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo following his resignation from office.
At plenary, Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore read a resignation letter dated March 27, 2026, in which Gwarzo said he was stepping down voluntarily in line with Section 306(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The development was also confirmed in a statement by the Speaker’s spokesperson, Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai.
Majority Leader Lawal Hussain Dala told journalists the House discontinued the impeachment process after the resignation. He added that any further action on alleged misconduct would be the responsibility of relevant anti-graft agencies.
In a related development, a member representing Kiru Constituency formally notified the Assembly of his defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing internal party challenges after consultations with constituents. The Assembly also received the Local Government Audited Accounts for the year ended December 31, 2024. Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Tukur Muhammad Fagge, presented the report.
Meanwhile, a bill to establish the Minjibir College of Education and Legal Studies was introduced by Abdulhamid Abdul Minjibir, who said the institution would expand access to education and ease pressure on urban centres.The Speaker, welcoming lawmakers back from the Sallah recess, urged residents to uphold values of unity and peaceful coexistence.
