Rehabilitation Works at Amuwo 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Progress – TCN

By Jabiru Hassan

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has informed the public that rehabilitation works at the Amuwo 132/33kV Transmission Substation, being executed by its contractor, are progressing steadily.

The project, which commenced in March this year, remains on track for completion in July 2026 as earlier announced. Currently, Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) equipment is being installed, while two 60MVA power transformers have been delivered to replace the existing 30MVA units.

Upon completion, the substation’s capacity will increase by an additional 60MVA, significantly enhancing power transmission capability.

To mitigate the impact of the works, TCN earlier deployed two mobile transformers to enable Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies to continue power offtake for their customers, thereby preventing a total blackout during the rehabilitation period.

The overhaul is expected to improve the substation’s performance and eliminate the frequent breakdowns and downtime associated with the old GIS.

Meanwhile, TCN acknowledged the inconvenience to electricity consumers and assured that efforts are being made to ensure timely completion of the project.

The company appealed to affected customers to be patient, noting that the ongoing works are aimed at boosting the Amuwo Substation’s capacity and delivering long-term benefits.

TCN reaffirmed its commitment to expanding transmission capacity nationwide to meet the growing demand for bulk electricity.
