Jonathan Says He Will Consult Widely Before Deciding on 2027 Presidential Race

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he will consult broadly before making any decision on calls for him to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Jonathan made the remarks in Abuja while receiving youth groups urging him to return to the presidential race. Responding to the appeal, he described presidential contests as serious undertakings that require careful consideration and consultation.

The former president commended the youths for showing interest in national affairs, saying civic participation and patriotism are important for nation-building. He also urged young Nigerians to promote peaceful and credible elections, noting that transparent electoral processes encourage capable citizens to participate in politics.

Jonathan expressed concern over low voter turnout in Nigeria, describing it as one of the lowest he has observed compared to elections in several African and Asian countries. He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to examine factors affecting participation and improve voter engagement.

He further encouraged young people to become actively involved in the electoral process by registering to vote and participating in elections.

The former president also spoke on the perception of Nigerians abroad, linking some of the challenges faced by citizens overseas to broader governance issues.

Jonathan, however, maintained that he had not taken any decision regarding the 2027 election and would continue consultations before making his position known.
