Financing bane of women’s participation in politics- Expert

A political expert and President of Coalition of Women in Governance, Dr. Mrs Asmau Adamu has said that financing in the bane in women’s participation in politics.

Adamu made this known yesterday in Abuja while giving a keynote address at One Day Town Hall Meeting organised by the League of Women Voters of Nigeria, NILOWV, FCT Chapter.

She said, ‘’ it is really difficult for women to vey for electoral positions because of lack of finance, adding that women need money to go into politics.’’

According to her, women have what it takes but that they need to stay together to support each other instead of pulling down fellow each other.

Adamu encourage all women to escalate their strength and come irrespective of their religious or ethnic affiliations.

Let’s forget pettiness and support each other, women need the space to make their voices heard, she advised.

She noted that women are already passionate about voting, but decried the manner in which they aloof themselves when they get into office.

Chairperson of NILOWV, FCT, Chief Mrs Marie Enegwea in her opening speech said that the aim of the association is to empower Women in Politics and have done so in partnership with stakeholders such as ActionAid and Global Affairs, Canada.

She advised women seeking political appointments to start from somewhere and urged women to come together for their voices to be heard.

Amira of Federation of Muslim Women of Nigeria, FOMWAN, Hajiya Bola Usman, a quasi- politician further called on women to come out from their shell to emulate the likes of Sarah Jubril, Nkeiru Onyejieocha in politics.

Usman who lamented that women have always engaged in Pull Down syndrome cited example of Sarah Jubril’s single vote. ‘’It is a shame and has brought women down in politics.’’

She urged women to fall behind women to vote for them.

Chairperson of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, FCT, Comrade Stella Okoh- Esene, in her welcome address also encouraged women to come out to vote during elections.

She said, ‘’ NAWOJ canvassed for Nkeiru Onyejieoch to be the first female speaker’’ and prayed that Nigerians should give a woman a chance to be the president of the country.
