LASPOTECH’s Mass Communication students sensitise people against cyber crime

Mass Communication students of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu in Lagos State, have urged residents of its host community to shun cybercrime but to embrace legitimate means of wealth acquisition.

The Higher National Diploma 2 (HND) Mass Communication students of the institutions gave the advice during a sensitisation walk round various departments of the institution on Friday.

Our correspondent reports that the walk was part of the students costume’s day and requirements for Mass Communication 417 Course, and for film production techniques.

The students carried banners and posters campaigning against cybercrime with the hash tag, #belegitandproud#.

Mr Steven Anu’ Adesemoye, the course lecturer who spoke during the sensitisation walk, said that the alarming growth of internet and its wide acceptance have led to an increase in security threats.

Anu’Adesemoye said that at present in Nigeria, several internet assisted crimes were being committed daily in various forms.

He listed them to include those committed through fraudulent electronic mails, pornography, identity theft, hacking, automated and teller machine spoofing.

“This is the reason why we have decided to create the awareness among the students, polytechnic community and youths is to celebrate our costume day using LASPOTECH’s campaign on zero tolerance to cybercrime.

“We equally identify the misnomer of getting to the top through short cut and back doors amongst the youth.

“Costume day is an integral part of film teaching and learning in the department and bringing the campaign to students will help to curtail crime,” he said.

Also speaking, Miss Princess Amadi, Head of  HND 2 Mass Communication students said that cybercrime was a threat against institutions and against people connected through computers or mobile technologies.

Amadi said that the high increase of the crime in the society had become a strong issue that should not be overlooked.
