4 feared dead in Makurdi over rival cult clash

By Sunday OglI

NO fewer than four persons have been reportedly killed during a clash between rival cult groups in Makurdi, Benue State capital.

The incident which took place around 7 pm in Awe Street and around Benue state Library, Wurukum yesterday, was said to have been sparked off by killing of one of the rival cult members who had visited from Abuja for his father’s burial ceremony.

It was learnt that the first victim was shot right at the wake of his father which took place Monday evening, while the attacker, a fifteen year-old boy was chased and killed with stones around state library.

A resident of Awe Street who confided in Nigerian Pilot said after the killing of the two persons, the cultists mobilised and started killing each other resulting to the death of two others.

The confidant said rival cult clash has become a frequent occurrence in the area, adding that most times, the cultists dress in military uniforms to harass residents.

When contacted, the acting Police Public Relations Officer, Olade failed to give details of the incident, explaining that the Divisional Police Officer, DPO in-charge of the area, could not brief him about the incident.

It would be recalled that two weeks ago, over 9 cultists were killed in Ushongo local government during a purported planned reconciliatory meeting while another was killed in High Level area of Makurdi with his head smashed with an axe.
