COVID-19: A’Ibom approves daily reopening of markets

By Samuel Ogenyi, Uyo

Governor Udom Emmanuel of Always Ibom has approved the reopening of markets in the state on a daily basis, after they were partially closed for four months due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

A statement from the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem and made available to newsmen in Uyo weekend said this was because of the need to revamp trade and economic activities in the state.

“Recall that during the course of the Covid 19 pandemic, the Governor Mr. Udom Emmanuel, had directed the partial closure and regulation of markets across the state. The directive was followed up with strict enforcement.

“After a careful analysis of the situation and the need to revamp trade at the market level, the Govenor, has approved the reopening of markets in the state for daily operations with effect from Saturday, 8th August,2020.” The statement said.

The markets it said would however operate under strict conditions while warning that disregard to such conditions could lead to the reclosure of such defaulting markets.

“Market authorities must ensure social distancing among both traders and buyers. All traders and buyers must wear face masks properly throughout their period of stay in the market.

“Hand washing equipment must be provided at all entry and exit points of the market. Market authorities are urged to strictly comply with the AKSG/NCDC/WHO COVID-19 guidelines and protocols.

“Take Notice that failure to strictly comply with the Covid-19 guidelines and protocols, will attract dire sanctions, including the closure of the defaulting market, as monitoring teams will be on patrol for enforcement.” It said.
