NASS member, Rotary Club to rehabilitate destitute teens in Uyo

A member of the National Assembly, Barr Onofiok Luke has promised to partner the Rotary Club to resettle and enpower some homeless teens who have become a nuisance in the highbrow Ewet Housing Estate of Uyo.

This is even as the club has earnmarked more than N13M for the execution of  projects in and around Uyo in the next one year and has also in partnership with Global Entrepreneurial Foundation empowered 50 indegent widows in the area with N50,000 each to boost their small scale businesses.

 Luke who represents Etinan Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives made this known during the installation of Mr Ofonmbuk Nelson as the 37th president of the Rotary Club of Uyo, District 9142 yesterday in Uyo.

The lawmaker who was also the chairman of the installation ceremony promised to ensure the  children have a means of livelihood even as he expressed worry that they have began to constitute a nuisance to residents.

Luke said the situation could degenerate to something worse if unchecked hence the need to urgently find solution to their plight calling on government to do something urgent to address the growing number of destitutes in Uyo.

Ofumbuk in his acceptance speech said the projects would cover the areas of education, regeneration of environment, skill acquisition, peace building/conflict prevention, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation.

The president said he would align with the Rotary’s strategic priorities and objectives of increasing impact, expanding reach, increasing participant engagement and increasing ability to adapt.

Immediate past president Mrs Idongesit Domingo-Inyang in her valedictory speech attributed the success story of the Club to members adding that 35 life touching projects  that impacted on communities were executed during her one year  tenure.

“With the support of a dependable board of Directors, committed Rotarians and project partners, we recorded great strides in all areas of focus and executed 35 life touching projects that impacted our communities.” Domingo Inyang said.
