House orders NCC to extend NIN registration by ten weeks

By Doris Ferdinand

The House of Representatives on Wednesday directed the National Communications Commission to extend the deadline for the submission of National Identity numbers to service providers from two to ten weeks.

This was as a result of a motion moved by a Rep. Ndudi Elumelu, at plenary.

The Lawmaker observed that though the policy is laudable, the timing was wrong as Nigerians have not been properly sensitized.

Elumelu, expressed concern that if the NCC is allowed to carry out the two weeks directive, it will bring about untold hardship as millions of subscribers will be disconnected in the yuletide period which could spell disaster.

He added that it will also create unnecessary panic which may lead to the exploitation of vulnerable Nigerians.

Contributing to the debate, a member from Oyo state, Mr Akeem Adeniyi, commended the policy by the NCC saying it will curb unnecessary competition by the service providers which is doing more harm than good.

Adopting the motion, the house mandated its Committee on Communication to ensure compliance.
