Gov Ortom gives pardon to Immates to decongest Correctional center

By Isaac Kertyo, Makurdi

Fifteen Inmates who are currently serving various jail terms at the Makurdi Correctional Center have regained their freedom.

The decision followed a directive by the Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom on the recommendation of the Benue State Committee on Prelogative of mercy.

The State Anthony General and Commissioner for Justice, Barr Mike Gusa, who represented the Governor, explained that the Federal Government has directed decongestion of Correctional Centers across the country during the covid-19 period.

Gusa pointed out that following directive from the presidency, Governor Samuel Ortom had promptly approved the release of some prisoners.

The categories of Inmates are those who could not afford the fine awarded against them after their sentences and those with less than six months to complete their jail terms.

The Commissioner advised those set free not to go back to their old criminal ways but imbibe good virtues that would enable them steer clear of arrest.

Gusa warned that anyone cough committing criminal act will not be spared. He pledged the state’s partnership with the center for the welfare of Inmates, charging them to celebrate New year as reformed citizens, even as he called on members of the society to embrace them.
