World Tourism Day: Imo commissioner calls for tourism consciousness

The Commissioner for Tourism in Imo, Mr Uche Ohia, has advised residents to develop “tourism consciousness” in order to promote a heritage of recreation and hospitality.
Ohia made the call on Monday in Owerri during a ceremony organised by the ministry to mark this year’s Tourism Day celebration, with the theme “Tourism for inclusive growth”.
He said that tourism could be promoted when people shun acts that demarket the state, keep the environment clean and strive to make the state a tourist destination.
“With fascinating cultural performances and an enduring heritage of recreation and hospitality, Imo has what it takes to transform into a tourism haven.
“We must ensure that all hands are on deck to develop a “tourism consciousness” in order to become a major tourism hub locally, regionally, nationally and internationally,” Ohia said.
He further said the theme for this year’s celebration underscored the role of tourism as a driving force for economic growth, inclusive development and environmental sustainability.
The commissioner also said the theme also aligns with Gov. Hope Uzodimma’s vision to make Imo an irresistible destination for heritage, medical and eco tourism.
He said the ministry had developed a roadmap for the reappraisal and rehabilitation of tourist sites in the state.
According to him, this will include the inspection and recertification of hospitality facilities and upscaling of the tourism environment to enhance access to all tourism clusters.
“The present administration is working out partnerships with stakeholders across tourism value chain, investors and the media to achieve this goal.
“We are working with optimism to harness the tourism potentials of our state,” the commissioner said.
