FCT demolishes illegal settlement in area one

By Joyce Osaji

There was uproars and confusion at the early hours of Wednesday as some government officials with armed security men with catapillas were seen moving towards an illegal settlement in area one popularly called banana and monkey in what seems like an impending demolition exercise.

Our reporter who monitored the event noticed that most of the residents were caught unaware despite several weeks of notification from the government.

Banana and monkey village as popularly known are illegal settlements located at the area 1 axis sharing fence with the old federal secretariat building.

One of the residents who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity said that the demolition was as a result of the illegal activities going on in the area. He said that some of the residents tapped water belonging to the federal secretariat which share the same fence with them.

He further said that the residents started selling the water to other residents and the action infuriated the federal government.

We also learnt that the residents tampered with the secretariat’s sewage which affected their toilet facilities in the complex, hence the action.
