Abia Elders Urge Politicians to Adhere…

Sam Obinna Ibe

Abia state Council of Elders has called on politicians in the State to respect and adhere to the Abia Charter of Equity that ensures that Abia South Senatorial Zone completes its two tenures just like Abia North and Abia Central did.

This they said is in the interest of fairness, justice and equity as enshrined in the Abia Charter”.

The elders stated this in a communiqué issued at the end of its 5th Plenary Session which took place on Thursday, 5th of November, 2018, in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, and signed by its President-General, Prof J. O. Irukwu SAN, Deputy President-General, H.E. O. S. Ike-Nwachukwu and Secretary-General, Prof Uche Ikonne.

According to the elders, the call has become necessary “in order to create an egalitarian society and a peaceful Abia State”.

The Council also spoke on other issues bordering on Restructuring and the need for peace in Abia State.

Among others position in the communiqué read as follows:

1. The Elders Council adopted in its entirety, the content and spirit of the 2014 National Conference document on Restructuring as its position and urged all Igbos to vote for only political parties that will fully implement Restructuring as enshrined in that document.

2. The Council advised all political parties campaigning for elective offices in the State to conduct themselves in very peaceful manner, avoiding any form of violence or use of foul language likely to disturb the peace of the state.

3. In the interest of fairness, justice and equity, as enshrined in the Abia Charter of Equity, members unanimously resolved that Abia South Senatorial Zone should be allowed to complete second term as the Governor of Abia State just like the other two senatorial zones had enjoyed. All well meaning Abians and political parties should adhere to this arrangement in order to create an egalitarian society and a peaceful Abia State.
