The Abia State education sector is witnessing significant growth following a sharp rise in school enrolment across the state, according to Governor Alex Otti. Speaking during a media chat, the governor said enrolment in public schools has increased from about 117,000 to over 300,000 pupils and students, attributing the development to reforms in the basic and secondary education system..
Governor Otti described the figures as encouraging and in line with his administration’s expectations from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.“That’s exactly the kind of result we expect. It’s good news,” he said, adding that the recruitment of 4,000 additional teachers is currently underway. He noted that measures have been put in place to ensure the process is conducted smoothly and transparently.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making education accessible and affordable for residents of the state. He disclosed that reconstruction and rehabilitation projects are ongoing in several public schools.
According to him, renovation, rebuilding and retrofitting works are also in progress at Abia State University and the Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu, including hostels and office facilities.He said the state government will continue to invest in education as part of its broader strategy to improve human capital development and public service delivery.
