Accept corps members, NYSC DG urges employers

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Maj.-Gen. Shuaibu Ibrahim, has appealed to employers to accept corps members posted to them.

This was disclosed at the closing ceremony of the 2022 Batch ‘A’ stream one orientation course at Damare orientation camp, Girei, on Tuesday.

The DG, represented by the Adamawa coordinator of the NYSC, Malam Ibrahim Tukur, said the corps employers were expected to accord priority to corps members’ welfare, in the provision of an enabling environment to adequately utilise their potentials.

While calling on both state and local government authorities, traditional rulers and other well-meaning stakeholders, to bolster NYSC members’ camaraderie for community development, Ibrahim equally charged corps members to remain dutiful, hardworking and resilient as a patriot, in the course of their orientation exercise.

“As you set to report to your places of primary assignment, I wish to stress the need for you to be diligent in the performance of your duties.

“I also urge you to integrate into your host communities, through learning their language and culture,” he adjured.

The DG noted that, as white-collar jobs were too crowded and far-fetched, corps members should endeavor to, in addition to their academic specialties, integrate their entrepreneurial skill-set, and to harness these skills in helping to develop host communities.

According to him, this would help reduce the rate of poverty, stem the tide of youth restiveness and tendencies for criminality.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that no fewer than 1,400 corps members successfully undertook the orientation course.

Meanwhile, corps members posted to Gombe State have been implored to take full advantage of the National Health Insurance Scheme, to stay healthy during their service year, whilst also observing COVID-19 protocols.
