Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has urged the management of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) to promptly address the current erratic power supply in the state.
Adeleke made this call during a meeting held with IBEDC management in Ibadan, Oyo State, emphasizing Osun’s significant role in the Nigerian power sector, particularly with Osogbo hosting the National Transmission Control Centre.
In a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke highlighted the adverse effects of power outages on security and the exploitation of consumers through transformer procurement and estimated billing.
He stated, “To address these issues, Osun is taking steps to enact the State’s Electricity System Law, establishing a Power Sector Regulatory Agency to ensure improved service within IBEDC franchise areas.”
Adeleke outlined Osun’s plans to introduce off-grid options and diversify energy sources to enhance accessibility and affordability.
In response, IBEDC Managing Director, Mr. Kingsley Achiefe, lauded Adeleke’s initiative, expressing readiness to collaborate with the government to enhance service delivery.
The development comes as Osun State Commissioner for Energy, Festus Adeyemo, recently revealed the state’s efforts to generate and distribute energy, citing funding challenges as a major impediment to the initiative.
