AFCON 2025: Lookman Nets Winner as Super Eagles Open Campaign with 2–1 Win Over Tanzania

Ademola Lookman scored the decisive goal as Nigeria began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2–1 victory over Tanzania.

The Super Eagles entered the contest as clear favourites and asserted their dominance early, controlling possession and creating several chances in the opening stages.

Nigeria’s pressure paid off when Semi Ajayi broke the deadlock. Following a corner kick, the ball was recycled into the box, where Alex Iwobi delivered a pinpoint cross for Ajayi to head home and give the three-time champions the lead.

Tanzania, however, found a way back into the game when Charles M’Mombwa was left unmarked inside the penalty area and made no mistake to level the score.

The response from Nigeria was swift. Just two minutes after conceding, Lookman restored the Super Eagles’ advantage, taking a couple of touches before calmly slotting the ball home with his left foot.

The goal proved enough to secure all three points for Nigeria as they made a winning start to their AFCON 2025 journey.
