Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana (SAN), has called on the Inspector-General of Police to take over investigations into the deaths of Mary Habila and Babatunde Tanimola, insisting that both cases deserve thorough and transparent investigations.

In a statement titled “These Deaths Must Not Be Swept Under the Carpet,” Falana said every suspicious death should be independently investigated, stressing that the right to life is fundamental.

He also urged authorities to expedite an autopsy in the case of Mary Habila, who was found dead on June 27, 2026, at a residence in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. Falana questioned the handling of the case, noting concerns over delays in conducting an autopsy after police reportedly declined a request by Habila’s father to release her body for burial.

According to Falana, while the Minister of Works, David Umahi, has denied any wrongdoing and said the matter was reported to the police, the circumstances surrounding the death warrant a comprehensive investigation.

The senior advocate also welcomed the Nigeria Police Force’s decision to investigate 30 suspected politically related killings linked to the build-up to the August 15 governorship election in Osun State. He urged the Osun State Attorney-General to ensure that any suspects arrested are promptly prosecuted in the appropriate court.

Falana further reminded authorities that the Coroner Laws of Ebonyi State, Osun State and the Federal Capital Territory require inquests into sudden, violent, unnatural or suspicious deaths.

He called on the media and relevant authorities to ensure that all suspicious death cases are fully investigated and handled transparently.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced that prospective corps members must obtain clearance from the National Electronic Registration Database (NERD) before they can be mobilised for national service.

In a notice shared on its official X account, the scheme said the clearance is now a compulsory requirement for all prospective corps members and urged eligible graduates to complete the process early to avoid delays.

According to the NYSC, candidates who fail to obtain NERD clearance will not be mobilised for the national service programme.

“NERD clearance is compulsory for all PCMs. No NERD clearance, No NYSC,” the scheme stated.

The directive comes as the NYSC prepares for the mobilisation of the 2026 Batch ‘B’ prospective corps members and intensifies measures to strengthen its verification process.

Although the scheme did not provide further details on the clearance procedure, it said the requirement forms part of efforts to improve the integrity of the mobilisation process.

The announcement follows the recent release of mobilisation guidelines for the 2026 Batch ‘B’ service year, with the NYSC urging institutions and eligible graduates to complete all required documentation before the orientation exercise.

The scheme also recently advised prospective corps members to avoid travelling at night to orientation camps, encouraging them to break their journeys when necessary and lodge in safe locations or designated military and security formations where available.

As mobilisation activities continue, prospective corps members are expected to complete all registration and verification requirements, including the mandatory NERD clearance, before reporting to orientation camp.

The presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) for the 2027 general election, Ambassador Aliyu Bin Abbas, has led a delegation on a consultative visit to former President Olusegun Obasanjo at his residence.

According to a statement issued by the candidate’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Okpani Jacob Onjewu Dickson, the visit was part of ongoing consultations with elder statesmen aimed at developing what the party described as an inclusive policy framework for a united, secure and prosperous Nigeria.

The delegation included the ADP’s vice-presidential candidate, Hon. Chinazam Ike; the party’s National Secretary, Hon. Victor Fingesi; the Chief of Staff to the presidential candidate, Hamza Nasarawa; and the National Secretary of the National Youth Alliance (NYA), Hon. Oludare Olatunde.

The statement said Obasanjo welcomed the delegation and commended its commitment to national development. It added that the former president expressed confidence in Nigeria’s future and said the country could overcome its challenges.

The statement also acknowledged social activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, for what it described as his words of encouragement and support.The visit comes as political parties and prospective candidates continue consultations ahead of the 2027 general election.
