A’Ibom begins remodeling of Uyo Township Stadium

Must read

Akwa Ibom state government has recommenced the remodeling of Uyo Township Stadium, more than one year after work was abandoned at the 10,000 capacity facility.

Governor Udom Emmanuel had given the marching order for the refurbishment of the sports edifice but work had ceased since March last year following the outbreak of the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic which compelled contractors to leave site.

During a visit to the Stadium, Thursday, it was observed that the playing surface had been completely compacted while contractors were working on drainages and sand filling.

Inspecting the work, Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Monday Uko said baring any unforeseen circumstances, the work would be completed on schedule.

“His Excellency is committed to the timely completion of all on-going projects in the lifespan of this administration in line with his Completion Agenda which is why we are here.

“We are embarking on a twin project because work has also resumed at Eket Township Stadium whose reconstruction was almost completed before the outbreak of Covid-19 otherwise these projects would since have been completed”.

“This Stadium is a historic facility which is very dear to Akwa Ibom people and we are committed to giving it the facelift it deserves and transforming it into a 21st-century-compliant structure.

“All the equipment required for the execution of this project are on ground and we are confident of completing this project as soon as possible.”  Uko said.

When completed the remodeled Uyo Township Stadium would not only be home to Akwa Ibom’s second astro turf facility but will also ease the pressure on the usage of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
