Some councillors of Ini Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State have accused the council chairman, Mr. Inibehe Umah, of allegedly using thugs to disrupt their plenary session on Tuesday.

The councillors also alleged a pattern of abuse of office, lack of transparency and absence of accountability since the chairman assumed office in October 2024.

Addressing journalists in Uyo, the Leader of the Legislative Council, Mr. Donald Usoroh, who spoke alongside seven other councillors out of 11, claimed they were attacked and assaulted during what should have been a routine sitting.

He alleged that the chairman stormed the council premises with over 100 suspected thugs, leading to violence inside the legislative chamber.

According to him, the council had earlier written to the chairman requesting a briefing on the local government’s income and expenditure as part of its oversight functions.

“Today is a sad day for democracy in Ini Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State,” Usoroh said.

He explained that the councillors had relied on provisions of the council bye-laws, particularly Section 28, which empowers the legislative arm to examine and debate monthly statements of income and expenditure presented by the chairman, as well as carry out oversight functions.

Usoroh alleged that since their inauguration on October 9, 2024, the legislative council had been prevented from effectively performing its duties.

He further claimed that during the incident, several councillors sustained injuries, while mobile phones belonging to lawmakers were damaged.

He also alleged that journalists covering the proceedings were attacked and had two cameras confiscated by the assailants.

Usoroh appealed to Governor Umo Eno, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and other stakeholders in Ini Local Government Area to intervene and prevent further escalation of tensions.

“We want peace. We are calling on all stakeholders to intervene so that what happened today will not repeat itself and to avoid bloodshed in Ini,” he said.

However, the council chairman, Mr. Inibehe Umah, dismissed the allegations in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on New Media, Mr. Idy Udofia.

The statement described the accusations as “false, baseless, fictitious, and a calculated exercise in political blackmail.”

It claimed that the recent approval of constituency projects valued at about ₦110 million for the 11 wards in Ini Local Government Area had generated public interest and that citizens had visited the council secretariat seeking clarification on project implementation.

According to the chairman’s position, the gathering at the council premises was driven by residents eager to obtain firsthand information from their elected representatives.

By Aga Samuel Imoter, Jalingo

Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has urged Christian leaders to defend truth, speak to political authorities when necessary and promote peace and moral values amid the social, economic and security challenges facing the country. Kefas made the call on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, while addressing participants at the Ministers’ Conference organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Taraba State Chapter, in Jalingo.

The conference, themed “The Church and the State: Partners in God’s Plan in a Changing World,” brought together Christian ministers and leaders to discuss the role of the Church in nation-building, peacebuilding and good governance. The governor said government and the Church have distinct constitutional and spiritual responsibilities but could collaborate in areas that promote peace, development and social stability.

He urged Christian leaders to uphold truth, compassion, justice and moral discipline while advising political authorities without allowing partisan interests to compromise the Church’s independence. “The Church must not become an extension of any political party,” Kefas said, urging ministers to provide constructive guidance and resist divisions based on politics, ethnicity or personal interests.

Kefas also called on religious leaders to use their platforms to discourage corruption, drug abuse, violence, hatred and injustice, while encouraging young people to pursue legitimate opportunities. He assured residents that his administration would continue to promote fairness, justice and peaceful coexistence while protecting citizens’ rights and freedom of worship.

The governor also expressed readiness to deepen collaboration with religious institutions in education, peacebuilding, community development and efforts to address drug abuse. He appealed to citizens and religious leaders to embrace unity and forgiveness, saying the development of Taraba required collective responsibility.
