Akwa Ibom State government has said it would henceforth confiscate and destroy motorcycles still in use within Uyo Metropolis, reminding residents of the ban on their use within the capital city.
Although the law still permit some organisations especially courier firms and dispatch riders to still operate the motorcycles, some of their riders have become notorious for their carelessness leading to several accidents and deaths.
A statement from the ministry of Internal Security and Waterways Thursday in Uyo and endorsed by the Commissioner, Gen Koko Essien (Rtd) said security agencies would from this weekend begin to enforce the order.
The statement said the move has become necessary following the return of illegal use of private and commercial motorcycles by residents within the metropolis even after the ban more than 12 years ago.
“Akwa Ibom State Government had noticed with dismay the illegal return of private and commercial motorcycles beyond designated areas in Uyo Metropolis against regulations issued and made public by the state government.
“For avoidance of doubt, the ban on the use of private and commercial motorcycles (except registered dispatch riders) within the Uyo Capital City Area which include Ikot Ekpene road, Abak road,Aka road, Oron road and Nwaniba road is still in force.
“By this notice, the state government is notifying the general public especially all motorcyclists, that security agencies have been briefed to strictly enforce the ban on the use of motorcycles within the Metropolis from Saturday, the 28th Day of October, 2023.
“To this end,any motorcycle found within the Uyo Capital City Development Area from the said date shall be confiscated and immediately destroyed without option of fine.” It concluded.
