A’Ibom youths threaten to shut down operations of oil firm

Youths of Mbo Local Council of Akwa Ibom have threatened to shut down operations of Oriental Energy Resources Limited in the state over alleged flouting of local content guideline of the Nigerian Content Act.

The youths made the threat shortly after meeting held in Enwang, Mbo Local Council of the state with the other youth organisations to brief them of their meeting with the company.

According to a joint statement by the National Youth President of Mbo, Mr Edward Abia Moses and that of Effiat, Etim Edet Bassey, the threat became necessary as a result of the noncompliance of Oriental Energy Resources to the resolution reached at a meeting with the Akwa Ibom youth, the Nigerian Content and Monitoring Board and the oil firm.

The youths called on the company to implement the resolution within two weeks else they would be forced to shut down oil operation.

They listed resolutions earlier reached with the company but which they failed to implement to include, “handling of Waste Management, Catering/House Keeping,Diesel Supply, Scaffolding/Sand Blasting/Painting,Tank Washing,Vessel Supply and Fabrication Works.

“OERL to engage Operations and Supply Chain Departments with a view to establish the existence of Contract opportunities and revert to the Host Community.

“All OERL contractors must meet and engage with the Host Community for more understanding with a view to establishing a strong relationship

“All OERL contractors must provide for CLOS and other forms of employment from the Host Community in line with the practice in the industry.

“Youths from the Host Community are to be encouraged to register on the NOJIC JQS portal of NCDMB for opportunities on HCDI of OERL.
Organise annual end of year get together and appreciation for CRC members.

“Training for youth in each project carried out by OERL in the field.
Establish an Operational office in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State in line with the provision of NOGCID Act.”
