By Ogenyi Ogenyi, Uyo

Veteran broadcast journalist Comrade Idongesit Ikono has been elected as the new Chairman of the Uyo Badminton Club 2020, following a recent general election. Ikono was chosen overwhelmingly by club members to lead the organization for the next two years.

The inauguration of the new seven-man executive committee took place at the Ultrafit Sports Centre in Uyo. In his inaugural address, Ikono acknowledged the pioneering work of the previous executive committee led by Mike Akang, praising their efforts in establishing and developing the club since its inception. He vowed to intensify efforts to promote both the club and the sport of badminton in the state.

Ikono outlined his plans, which include acquiring a permanent facility for the club and organizing more intra- and inter-club competitions. He also called on all members to collaborate with the new executive committee to elevate the club to new heights.

In addition, Ikono announced the formation of a three-man committee, chaired by Sir Raph Edem, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Umo Eno on Marketing and Brand Management. This committee will be responsible for planning a free two-week badminton clinic for children, aimed at nurturing young talent.

Founded in 2020, the Uyo Badminton Club 2020 operates out of the Ultrafit Sports Centre in Ewet Housing, Uyo.
