Anthrax Outbreak in Lagos: Sanwo-Olu’s Swift Response

Must read

In response to an Anthrax outbreak in Lagos, the state government under the leadership of Governor Sanwo-Olu has taken immediate action to curb the spread of the deadly disease. The government has announced the confiscation, burning, and burial of six animals infected with Anthrax, all part of their efforts to prevent further transmission.

Olatokunbo Emokpae, the permanent secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture, issued a statement on Sunday, July 30, revealing that the cases were discovered during routine surveillance of animals in Lagos Island and Agege. However, the good news is that no human infections have been identified or reported since the discovery of the disease in Lagos.

To ensure the situation is well-managed, the government has intensified both human and animal surveillance activities. They have also launched free vaccination campaigns and increased monitoring to protect animals from Anthrax. Animal owners are urged to bring their herds forward for inoculation to safeguard their health.

In case of any suspected cases of Anthrax in animals, the public is encouraged to report promptly to the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture Director of Veterinary Services. Emergency telephone numbers have been provided for this purpose: 08023427594, 08180703010, or contact the Veterinary Epidemiologist at 08023328244.

The government is also issuing a warning not to go near or come in contact with animals suspected of being infected with Anthrax. The support and cooperation of cattle rearers are requested as veterinary operatives begin the vaccination exercise.

As the state government works diligently to protect the public and animals from this serious disease, they seek the collaboration of all animal owners during this critical time. The goal is to contain and eradicate Anthrax, ensuring the safety and well-being of the community.
