Area Council Election: Tension trails voting exercise as stranded voters mill polling units

By Joyce Remi- Babayeju

Tension trailed the much anticipated FCT election in the six Area Councils as stranded voters who mill polling units wait for accreditation and voting which began in the early hours of today Saturday.
Voters in all the sixty two political wards which constitute the voting units were noticed to be physically perturbed as the polling exercise began.

There was confusion in some wards like Abaji Area Council prospective voters at Ona of Abaji palace polling unit, Angwar Sabo and Abaji Central Primary School where voters were Stranded due to BVAS failure, as staff of the Independent Electoral Commission Officials seem helpless.

Also in Kuje Area Council voters were seen milling around the polling units without the presence of INEC staff nor voting materials.

A PDP agent Ibrahim Musa and and an APC agent Yahaya Sadiq who both expressed their dissatisfaction blamed INEC for their lack of adequate preparedness to ensure a stress free exercise.

At Karu Ward, Madam Pauline a voter confessed that she was already discouraged by the whole process.

She said, “No voters register for the voters to identify their names, we are moving round without direction, its back and front situation since I arrived here.”

Daybreak noticed that the situation was similar the same in Garki as of the the time of filling this report.

Meanwhile, at Jiwa Ward, Polling Unit 002 , the Presiding Officer, Agwu Agnes disclosed that a total of 2,401 ballot papers were provided by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the Chairmanship and councillorship election.

Surprisingly while the names of candidates of the different political parties participating in the Chairmanship election were displayed, that of the APC candidate was missing.

Recalled that the Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the candidacy of Murtala Karshi, against Alhassan Suleiman Gwagwa (aka Biggy), who was, until the Thursday ruling, the popular candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters.

At Kugbo 1 and 2 unit the situation appeared worst as only five persons voted in both the polling units while other prospectives voters were stranded.
