27 Feared Dead as Gunmen Attack Angwa Rukuba Community in Jos North

By Israel Adamu, Jos

At least 27 persons are feared dead, with several others injured, following a violent attack by suspected gunmen on Angwa Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers, operating in large numbers, stormed the densely populated community around 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, opening sporadic gunfire that threw residents into panic.

Barr Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, President of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), confirmed the casualties, saying 14 victims were killed on the spot while 13 others later succumbed to injuries in hospital. Their bodies have been deposited within the community.

Describing the attack as a “sad episode” in the recurring security challenges facing Plateau State, Mwantiri called on relevant authorities to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure they face justice without delay.

The attack comes amid rising insecurity in parts of Plateau State, prompting residents to demand improved security measures to prevent further bloodshed.

The Plateau State Government had earlier imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North Local Government Area in response to the incident. In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, the government condemned the “barbaric and unprovoked attack” on innocent citizens.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang assured residents that all necessary steps are being taken to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice. The statement urged citizens to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperate with security agencies by providing any information that could aid ongoing investigations.

Residents were also advised to strictly adhere to the curfew to enable security operatives to maintain order and prevent further violence in the community.
