George Floyd: NCAC, NIDCOM hold memorial, call for justice

Mr Olusegun Runsewe, Director-General, National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), has called on the authorities in the United States of America to ensure that justice is served in George Floyd killing.
Runsewe made the call during a memorial session held at NCAC headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday in honor of the slain African-American.
He added that it had become necessary for Nigeria to join other countries across the world to organise a memorial for George Floyd.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Floyd was killed while being arrested by the police in Minneapolis, United States of America, on May 25.
“It has become necessary to emphasis that as Africans, our culture has great respect for the sanctity of human life, we are a peaceful, loving and God-fearing people that detest violence.
“This is why we are joining the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission to ask for justice for late George Floyd and to propagate the message of peace all over the world.
“We believe that all men are created equal and have inalienable rights among which are rights to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.
“From Africa to USA, Latin America, Asian, Europe and the Pacific, we say let justice flow; let love reign and let there be peace,” he said.

Also in attendance was Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM).
In her tribute, Dabiri-Erewa reminded the crowd that witnessed the event that as blacks, demand for justice for Floyd’s death should be a collective effort as the DNA of an African runs in every African.
“As a black person, you must aspire to come back to your motherland where you can freely breathe.
“As a black person, you should think of coming back to Africa/Nigeria to invest in an environment where you can freely breathe.
“As a black person, come back to your home where you will be shown love,” she said.
There was a minute silence in memory of Late George Floyd and all the other black African heroes all over the world who had suffered violent attacks and even death on account of the colour of their skin. (NAN)

  • Edo poll: Gov. Obaseki fears re-election bid under APC

Edo poll: Gov. Obaseki fears re-election bid under APC

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo says his re-election bid under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) is narrowed because of the interest of the party’s National Chairman, Mr Adams Oshiomhole, in the state.

Obaseki expressed his fears on Wednesday at a news conference shortly after he was screened by the seven-member screening committee headed by Prof. Jonathan Ayuba at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

The governor alleged that some of the questions asked by the committee showed that Oshiomhole had not distanced himself from the process of conducting governorship primaries in the state.

“Like I said, as a party man I have gone through the screening process but I do not believe that I will get justice because Comrade Adams Oshiomhole is an interested party in the Edo process.

“One of the questions that was asked was that why did I issue a gazette that will prevent the party from performing direct elections in Edo.

“That did I not see it as an anti-party activity? I just felt that if we put politics above the the lives of the people of Edo State, then we may be missing the point,” he said.

Obaseki recalled that when he came to the party’s National Secretariat to submit his nomination form, he told a news conference that Oshiomhole should distance himself from the process.

“The last time I came here, I asked that Oshiomhole should recluse himself from the process in the interest of peace and justice.

“But as a party man, I have had to go through the screening like everybody else.

“Since he is the judge and the jury in this matter, I will just wait for the outcome of the screening.

“I have given them all the information they need; the controversial certificate from the University of Ibadan has been tendered,” he said. (NAN)

Tunde Obe reveals he suffered racism when he was in the US

Tunde Obe has revealed that he suffered racism at the hands of a white woman when he was living in USA.

At the age of 7, the singer went to pay a friend if his a visit at his home.

To his shock, the friend’s mother unleashed their dog on him simply because of the colour of his skin.

He wrote: “If you have suffered racism, it will forever leave a sour taste in your mouth.. My father was a diplomat (Ambassador), so he was always transferred to different countries.. In 1974 he was transferred to America.. We lived in Washington DC. I grew up with a free mind… .towards all races.. I had friends of all races in school and I never discriminated..

One day I went to visit one of my class mates at his home.. He was White.. His house was not too far from mine, so I walked. I got there and I rang their bell. His Mom, a White lady, came out….Looked at me with disgust and asked what I wanted.. I mentioned my friends name and she opened the latch on the gate to let me in..

She said I should follow her, as she walked towards the backyard, where I assumed my friend was.. As soon as she turned the corner she called…their dog’s name and shouted, “Sick Him!!”.. This huge Alsatian dog just went for me..

But I guess because God still had plans for me, I made it to the gate before the dog could pounce on me.. Luckily for me, the dog stopped at the gate.. I didn’t stop running till I got home..

That experience has remained engraved in my mind till today.. I will never forget how she was shouting “Get the Nigger”, as I ran for my dear life..The first time I would experience such hatred.. I had done nothing to deserve.. I was only about 7 or 8 years old..

This was in 1975, or thereabouts.. Racism has been around for a very long time.. I pray that one day it will be relegated to the dustbin of history, where it belongs.. People should be judged by their character, and not their skin colour”.

  • Death hoax: The only controversy in Olu Jacobs’ career

Death hoax: The only controversy in Olu Jacobs’ career

Again, it was rumoured that veteran Nollywood actor, Olu Jacobs is dead.

However, popular actress, Lala Akindoju and his wife who is also a veteran actress, Joke, debunked the news. They revealed that the amazing script interpreter is still very much alive.

It is however worthy to note that, this rumored news is the only controversy that has rocked the Yoruba born actor throughout his career.

After spending decades in the entertainment industry, Olu Jacobs has not faced any scandal/controversy.

Olu Jacobs, born Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, was born on the 11th of July, 1942. He hails from Egba Alake in Ogun state.

Olu spent his early life in Kano state, where he attended Holy Trinity School. He was a member of the debating and drama societies.

Olu studied acting at the Royal Academy of Drama and Art, London, where he starred in various British television shows and series in the 1970s.

    Olu walked down the aisle with his wife, Joke Silva in 1989. When asked why she bares her maiden name, he replied;

“She is her own individual. When I met her, she was an actress known as Joke Silva so why should marrying me now deny her and her audience her name. She is Miss Joke Silva who is Mrs. Joke Jacobs. It is as simple as that. People now begin to say what they like. They have even written that we are separated and all sort of stuff. When she is working, she is Joke Silva but she is Mrs. Joke Jacobs at home.”

When it comes to acting, he is a big shot. Controversies and Olu Jacobs do NOT go together.

Sadly, Olu Jacobs has been battling an unknown sickness for a while now. Days ago on his Instagram page, he alongside his wife, Ajoke Silva debunked reports of supporting any medication to treat diabetes.

“We have NOT endorsed any medication to treat diabetes or any drug for the treatment of any ailment. If and when we do the public will be informed in advance on our platforms and it will be audiovisual.” the couple wrote.
