Edo govt advises UNIBEN authorities on maintenance of Edo 2020 facilities

The Edo deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, on Thursday called on the authorities of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) to ensure they properly maintain the institution’s sports facilities.

Shaibu, who made the call shortly after inspecting the hostels of UNIBEN and the Ekewan campus in Benin, said the state government would be very happy to see proper maintenance.

The hostels on both campuses would be used to camp athletes during the 20th National Sports Festival (NSF) tagged “Edo 2020’’.

“It’s very sad to see that UNIBEN cannot maintain its facilities. It’s very sad to see that this is where our brothers, sisters and sons are being accommodated.

“The past leadership has failed this institution. They didn’t do their work. It’s not about teaching these students in the classrooms. It is also about their behaviour in the hostels.

“And if they have to live in this kind of environment, you can imagine the attitude they will graduate with.

“For me, this is not acceptable that we have to allow these facilities to run down this way before seeking intervention.

“The management of this institution will have to redefine how this university will live up to expectations not only in terms of academic performance, but also in infrastructure.

“I am appealing to the new Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami, to up her game and not behave like previous vice-chancellors,’’ the deputy governor said.

He however said he was still worried about how the university was going to ensure a proper maintenance of the facilities.

“My fear now is that state government is bringing tax-payers money to maintain these facilities. After fixing these facilities, what is the guarantee that we will not go back to this same situation,’’ Shaibu said.

The deputy governor, who also expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of renovation of Queen Idia Hall 1 hostel in UNIBEN, called on the contractor to step up the level of work.

In his reaction, Olanrewaju Adeleke, who is a representative of the contractors handling the hostels’ renovation, Peculiar Ultimate Consult, reiterated the assurances earlier given.

He said the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) has assured that the hostel would be ready for the Festival in the next 14 days.(NAN)

  • NTTF has lived up to Nigerians’ expectations ahead of 2020 Olympics, table tennis umpire says

NTTF has lived up to Nigerians’ expectations ahead of 2020 Olympics, table tennis umpire says

John Peters, a Nigerian table tennis umpire, says the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) has lived up to expectations ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Peters told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos that it was gratifying that three of NTTF athletes have qualified to represent the country at the Summer Olympics.

Funke Oshonaike, Offiong Edem and Olajide Omotayo secured qualification tickets at the just-ended Africa Qualifications Tournament in Tunis, Tunisia from Feb. 27 to Feb. 29.

“It was a very pleasant outing for the players and a great achievement for the NTTF to confirm that its sport’s shortlist towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was not a fluke.

“I am not only happy but feel proud to belong to the table tennis family. These players have performed well by qualifying for the Games,” Peters said.

The umpire applauded the Ishaku Tikon-led NTTF board for its work and commitment in the preparation stages of the Olympic qualifiers, saying this greatly contributed to the players’ successful outing.

He pointed out that the performances of Oshonaike and Edem at the qualifiers indicated that the Nigerian women were coming up in the sport as earlier yearned for by the federation.

“The team did well. But I must declare that the female ones are improving a great deal and I am particularly impressed because of the oppression from Egypt players.

“It is a proof that when issues that are stake are very weighty, we can count on them. Oshonaike in spite of not being fortunate at the African Cup is determined to set an African record.

“Today, she is the first African female athlete to feature seven times at the Olympics in table tennis and even in any other sport which is a very proud performance.

“Edem is another force to reckon with. She has represented Nigeria in continental games, the 2004 and 2012 Olympics and now she will be at Tokyo 2020,’’ Peters added.

He described Omotayo as a shining star who has proven that he will go places.

Omotayo has won the African Games men’s singles title at the continental tournament held in Rabat, Morocco in 2019.

Peters, however, expressed optimism that Quadri Aruna, the ITTF 18th-ranked player who pulled out of the qualification tournament due to injury, would be considered based on his outstanding record.

“Omotayo as a young player started well and has been doing well. He also proved this last year at the African Games. So, we have high hopes on him that he will deliver.

“I am very sure that, normally, Aruna would have qualified. But unfortunately he could not continue due to sudden injury during the third stage of the group matches,’’ he said.(NAN)

Envoys advocate use of sports for gender equality, empowerment

Officials from both the British High Commission and the U.S. Embassy on Thursday called for the use of sports to empower women and create gender equality in all spheres of life.

The acting British Deputy High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Moon, said sports was a veritable tool to promote gender equality aside from the various international legislation.

Moon spoke on the sidelines of the Generation Equality Football Competition to commemorate the 2020 International Women’s Day.

“Today is a day to have fun and watch the women play football, but there is a deeper political purpose behind these activities.

“The UK is absolutely committed to identifying more women in sports as part of a wider agenda to promote women and gender equality,” Moon said.

He said the UK would be collaborating more with the Nigerian government to promote women in all sectors, including politics, education and sports.

Similarly, the Chargè d Affaires, U.S Embassy in Nigeria, Kathleen FitzGibbon, while speaking at the same event said gender equality was critical to having an egalitarian society.

She said sports was one of the ways of promoting gender equality and the U.S. was committed to women sports right from the early age.

The six-team women competition was won by Team Helpline Foundation which defeated Team NUJ 2-0 in the final.

Earlier, Team U.S. had beaten their British High Commission (BHC) counterparts by the same scoreline to emerge third.

The football competition was organised by FAME Foundation as part of activities to commemorate the 2020 International Women’s Day.(NAN)

  • Edo APC faction rallies support for Oshiomhole

Edo APC faction rallies support for Oshiomhole

A faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo loyal to Adams Oshiomhole has vowed to resist any attempt to rubbish the National Chairman of the party.

A member of the faction, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu stated this at a news conference in Benin on Thursday.

He was reacting to an FCT High Court which ordered Oshiomhole to step down as APC national chairman.

Ize-Iyamu, who is a governorship aspirant in the forthcoming election in the state, restated the faction’s loyalty to the embattled chairman.

Ize-yamu described Oshiomhole as an asset to the APC in the state and country in general.

Justice Danlami Senchi of the FCT High Court ordered the interim suspension of the APC national chairman on Wednesday in a case instituted by Mr Olawale Afolabi.

The court had ordered Oshiomhole to step down pending the determination of the suit seeking his perpetual removal as the APC national chairman.

“The people of the state stand solidly behind him, even his ward, so all should ignore any narration that he is not popular in the state,’’ he said.

Ize-Iyamu said that the faction would not be intimidated by political happenings in the state.

Also speaking, Mr Henry Idahagbon, immediate past Attorney-General of the state, described the court order as a judicial action which the party had responded to in a judicial way.

Idahagbon appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to intervene in the crisis of the party in the state. (NAN)

  • Cars purchase: APC kicks against Bayelsa Assembly’s approval of N2.9bn for Gov. Diri

Cars purchase: APC kicks against Bayelsa Assembly’s approval of N2.9bn for Gov. Diri

The Bayelsa chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) has berated the state House of Assembly for the approval of N2.9 billion loan to Gov. Douye Diri to purchase cars.

The Publicity Secretary of APC in Bayelsa, Mr Doifie Buokoribo, expressed the party’s position while reacting to the approval in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yenagoa on Thursday.

Mr Abranhama Ingobere, Speaker, Bayelsa House of Assembly, who announced the decision of the House at Wednesday’s plenary said that the loan from commercial banks had a three-year tenure

Ingobere explained that the loan would be deployed to purchase operational vehicles for the governor, his deputy and top officials of Bayelsa government.

Buokoribo, however, described the move by Diri as self serving, insensitive when the state was yet to meet outstanding obligations to civil servants and pensioners.

“The decision of Sen. Diri to take a bank loan of N2.9 billion for the purpose of buying “operational vehicles for the governor, his deputy and other top government functionaries is regrettable

” Coming less than three weeks as governor, this move is unsympathetic. Sadly, the Bayelsa State House of Assembly has approved the loan request.

“Diri is taking the loan at a time when civil servants and pensioners in the state have not been paid.

“This is a continuation of the frivolities of the PDP government of Dickson; a major reason the people of the state roundly rejected them at the poll.

“This cannot be the government that the people of Bayelsa State deserve. It cannot be the government the people voted for,” Buokoribo said.

He recalled that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government came to power through the Feb. 13 Supreme Court decision that nullified the victory of APC’s David Lyon.

“Legally, Douye Diri is the governor of Bayelsa State, but in the hearts and minds of our people, he is illegitimate. He was not the one they voted for.

“He will bear the burden of illegitimacy throughout his tenancy at Creek Haven, Government House, Yenagoa,” he said.

The Assembly had  in Feb. 2017 approved a loan request of N3 billion by Ex-Gov. Seriake Dickson for the purchase of cars for his use and 24 Assembly members.(NAN)

The Commission had before the emir requested for extension of time to honour the invitation was given Thursday, March 5.

The commission had before the emir requested for extension of time to honour the invitation, was given Thursday.

Muhuyi, also explained that Emir Sanusi is being invited to clear himself over allegation of illegal sale of government property, adding that this allegation is not related to the previous investigation of alleged financial fraud of N3.4 billion from the coffers of the Emirate Council.

“I wish to categorically state that, this commission is entering a new investigation brought forward by a whistleblower on 29th December, 2019 and is not related to an earlier investigation which is still subject matter of civil suit.

“As we await the arrival  of the invitee, we received a letter from Messrs Dikko and Mahmoud stating among other things that the powers of this commission to initiate criminal complaint is being challenged in suit No.K/208/2019.

“They also on behalf of their client requested for postponement of the date to March 25, 2020, and some document to allow their client prepare for the case in suit, “ he said.

The chairman said in response to that the commission drew their attention on the binding decision of the Court of Appeal, which affirmed the Kano State High Court’s decision that settled the powers of the commission to investigate allegation of corruption against any person in the state.

He said the commission had equally denied the requested document as same may jeopardise its investigation, but assured to make available to them its findings along with any document when it concludes investigation. (NAN)

Yahaya said the forum met on the challenges facing the sub-region and to proffer solutions toward resolving them.

He said that the forum would direct the Attorney-Generals of all the states to look into the possibilities of enhancing security in the sub-region within the ambit of law.

“We have realised that other states have individual laws governing security management and we have also realised the need for a collaborative understanding because of activities of criminals in border communities.

“To avoid a conflict in those laws and the need to operate within the ambit of the law; we have seen the need to have a clear understanding and a collaborative effort,” he said.

  • WHO warns some countries not taking Covid-19 ‘serious enough’

WHO warns some countries not taking Covid-19 ‘serious enough’

Many countries have still not made the fight against the novel coronavirus a top priority involving entire governments and societies, the UN’s health chief warned on Thursday, as the Covid-19 outbreak continued to expand its reach.

“It’s a long list,” World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters when asked which countries have left the virus to their health ministries instead of taking an all-country approach that is led by the head of state or government.

“We’re concerned that some countries have either not taken this seriously enough, or have decided there’s nothing they can do,” Tedros said.

The Covid-19 virus, which emerged in China and has since spread far beyond, can be contained with aggressive measures, he stressed, pointing to falling infection numbers in China as well as policies implemented in countries such as Singapore, Vietnam and South Korea.

“This is not a drill. This is not the time to give up. This is not a time for excuses. This is a time to pull out all the stops,” he said.

Every aspect of government needed to be involved: “security, diplomacy, finance, commerce, transport, trade, information and more,” he said.

The virus has killed more than 3,200 people and infected more than 95,000 worldwide, the WHO chief said, while also pointing to encouraging slowdowns in new cases in China and South Korea.

But the virus pushed into another corner of Europe on Thursday, with Bosnia-Herzegovina reporting its first case, while Switzerland and Britain recorded their first deaths.

European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said around 4,200 infections have been registered in Europe by Thursday evening.

Italy is still the country worst affected in Europe and coronavirus cases there jumped to 3,858 on Thursday from 3,000 a day earlier, the country’s Civil Protection Agency reported.

Rome doubled funding for a package of measures to mitigate the economic impact of the virus, to 7.5 billion euros (8.4 billion dollars).

Italy’s government also decided postponed a March 29 constitutional referendum due to the crisis.

In the Netherlands, infections more than doubled over the past 24 hours to 82 cases, the Health Minister said.

In Britain, where there are a total of 115 infections, the first person to die was a patient who had underlying health conditions.

France confirmed a rise of 138 cases since the day before, bringing its total to 423. Seven people have died in the country.

The Paris Marathon was postponed from April 5 to October 18, the AFP news agency reported. More than 60,000 people were registered to take part.

But France’s Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said on Thursday that municipal elections across the country would go ahead on March 15 and 22.

Next door in Germany, the Robert Koch Institute put the number of confirmed infections at more than 400.

The economic effects of the disease also continued to ripple as more events were cancelled, including the Tomorrowland Winter electronic music festival in France and Russia canceled its annual St Petersburg International Economic Forum that was set for June.

And as events were axed or postponed, airlines cut capacity and connections.

Low-cost airline Norwegian Air said it is suspending 22 long-haul flights between Europe and the US, citing lower demand, following other airlines that have reduced trans-Atlantic service.

Similarly, Poland’s flagship airline carrier LOT extended its suspension of flights to Beijing until April 25, and suspended flights from Budapest to Seoul until April 8.

Worldwide, airlines will suffer revenue losses of at least 63 billion dollars this year because of the coronavirus outbreak, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said, doubling its previous estimate.

While the estimate is based on the assumption that the virus can be contained, losses could reach 113 billion dollars if it spreads further, the industry group warned, adding that passenger demand will drop by 19 per cent this year in this scenario.

The new coronavirus originated in China late last year and has since spread to every continent apart from Antarctica.

Iran, which has the highest coronavirus cases in the Middle East, has closed schools and universities, as well as cinemas and theatres. On Thursday, the health minister even advised citizens to avoid using cash to help stem the spread.

Iran has so far confirmed 3,513 coronavirus cases, resulting in a total of 107 deaths.

Some people catch the virus and never show signs of illness, but the elderly and people with pre-existing breathing problems are more at risk.

Meanwhile, the European Parliament said it would hold next week’s plenary session in Brussels, rather than travelling to its regular seat in the French city of Strasbourg.

The EU and India also scrubbed a March 13 summit due to fears about the virus.

Trump defends rhetoric and slams rivals in first town hall of 2020

US President Donald Trump defended his often divisive rhetoric, as he fielded questions in his first town hall of 2020 on Thursday, and said he will continue to “hit back,” as the presidential election is in full swing.

“When they hit us we have to hit back,” Trump said responding to a question about his political rhetoric. “You can’t turn your cheek.”

The town hall – a televised question and answer session with potential voters – is Trump’s first in the 2020 presidential election cycle and comes as the race for his Democratic opponent has narrowed to a two-man competition.

Trump said he was “all set” to face left-wing Senator Bernie Sanders, describing him as “communist,” before former vice president Joe Biden had a surprise resurgence in the past few days.

The president defended his administration’s actions on health care and immigration, and discussed his foreign policy with North Korea and Afghanistan.

Trump – a known germaphobe who was once reluctant to shake supporters’ hands – also said he will continue to shake hands despite the outbreak of coronavirus.

“The bottom line is I shake anybody’s hand now, I’m proud of it,” he said. (dpa)
